Hello everyone and welcome to the Union Hockey Blog! This blog covers the Union College Dutchmen Division I ice hockey team. The team plays at Messa Rink in Schenectady, New York, and is one of twelve teams in the East College Athletic Conference.
This blog was founded in the Fall of 2009 by Dan Greene '11, who was a junior at Union at the time. Dan is a die-hard Union Hockey fan. During his time at Union he covered the team for the Union student newspaper (the Concordiensis), was Sports Editor of the Concordiensis, Sports Director for the Union radio station (WRUC 89.7FM), Arena Reporter for USCHO, and an intern in the Union Sports Information Department. Dan also played for Union's club hockey team during his four years where he was treasurer for two years, and president and captain his senior year, as well as an ACHA Academic All-American. He has been following college hockey since he was four years old, when his family bought season tickets for Army Hockey for the first time. Since then, he's been to hundreds of college hockey games, including many Frozen Fours. Dan is from Yorktown Heights, NY and graduated with a degree in History.
When Dan graduated in June 2011, he handed the blog over to three of his friends, who are big Union Hockey fans: Justin Zolot '12, Evan Slavit '12, and Zach Pearce '12.
Justin began contributing to the blog in December 2010 when Dan traveled abroad for three weeks in Egypt (right before the revolution), and continued to do so throughout the 2010-11 season. He has posted some of the most popular posts in the history of UHB, and is also well known for his t-shirt sales. Justin is the leader of the student section at Messa Rink, and even had an article in the Times Union focus around him. It's hard to miss him at game (home or away) with his Union jersey on and waiving the big Union flag. Justin is from North Andover, Massachusetts and is studying Economics.
Evan has followed in the footsteps of Dan as he is currently Sports Editor for the Concordiensis, Sports Director of WRUC 89.7 FM, and an Arena Reporter for USCHO. He is extremely knowledgable in many sports and has written for blogs that cover the New York Giants. Evan has also worked for Union Athletics and YNN. His friendship with Zach (see below) is often tested on the grounds of his Rangers fandom. Evan is from Short Hills, New Jersey and is an English major.
Zach heavily supports the Mets and Islanders (sadly, like Dan). Zach is the co-GM of WRUC 89.7FM, and hosts radio shows where he goes by the name of "Wolfman." His favorite sports radio personality is Steve Somers of WFAN 660AM. Zach is famous for his article about Denis Flavin, who was the Zamboni driver at Messa Rink for many years, in the Concordiensis this past Spring. It was one of the most read and most popular articles in the 2010-11 school year. Zach is from Norwalk, CT, where Paul Newman learned how to skate for the film Slap Shot. He is an English major.
UHB is always looking for new writers. If you are interested in writing for UHB please contact Justin (zolotj@garnet.union.edu), Evan (slavite@garnet.union.edu), or Zach (pearcez@garnet.union.edu). All are welcome to apply!
